The OB Cottage

Ocean Beach guide

OB, from a local's point of view.

Ocean Beach is San Diego's most unapologetically itself neighborhood — barefoot, briny, and a little bohemian. Here's how we'd spend a few days, all from the cottage's front door.

Don't miss

The OB greatest hits.

  • See 8 min walk

    Ocean Beach Pier

The longest concrete pier on the West Coast and the heart of OB. Walk out over the surf at sunrise, watch the anglers, and grab a coffee at the pier café. Note: portions may be under repair — check current access before you go.

  • Do 6 min walk

    OB Farmers Market

Every Wednesday afternoon, Newport Avenue closes to traffic and fills with produce stands, street food, live music, and local makers. Bring a tote and an appetite.

  • Do 12 min walk

    Dog Beach

One of the country's original leash-free beaches, right where the San Diego River meets the sea. Pure, sandy, tail-wagging joy — bring your pup or just come watch.

  • Eat 5 min walk

    Hodad's burgers

The OB institution. A bacon cheeseburger the size of your head, surfboards on the walls, and a line out the door that's worth it. Three blocks up Newport — go early or go late.

  • See 10 min drive

    Sunset Cliffs Natural Park

Dramatic sandstone bluffs just south of OB with some of the best sunsets in California. Time it for golden hour, mind the edges, and bring a layer for the breeze.

  • Do 3 min walk

    Surf the OB break

Beginner-friendly beach breaks and a few local rental/lesson shops within walking distance. The cottage stocks towels and an outdoor rinse shower for when you come back salty.

  • Do 6 min walk

    Newport Avenue stroll

Vintage shops, antique malls, dive bars, surf boutiques, and ice cream — OB's main street is made for an aimless afternoon wander.

  • Do 10 min ride

Robb Field & the river path

Tennis, skate park, ball fields, and a flat bike path along the San Diego River — easy morning miles on the cottage cruisers.

Eat & drink

Where to point your appetite.

  • Hodad's

The legendary OB burger joint on Newport Ave. Cash-friendly, line moves fast.

  • Pier Pizza Co.

Grab a slice and walk it out onto the pier for the sunset view.

  • OB People's Co-op

Local organic market for stocking the cottage kitchen — a quick cruiser ride.

  • Point Loma Seafoods

Fresh-off-the-boat fish and the best ceviche in town, a short drive around the point.

Beach intel

A few things the locals know.

  • Mornings are calm and uncrowded — best for a swim or a quiet walk.
  • Afternoon wind picks up; the included umbrella earns its keep.
  • Check the tide chart on the fridge before tide-pooling at the cliffs.
  • Sunsets are the main event — head to the pier or cliffs 30 min before dusk.
